Hijab crisis: Forum files New 11 cases

The last may not have been heard on the controversy trailing the wearing of hijab by International School Muslim female students, Ibadan said on Friday as the parents ' forum under the auspices of the ISI Muslim Parents Forum, it has filled up fresh 11 cases to pursue the case to a logical conclusion legally.

The parents also said it had relevant petition authorities including the National Human Rights Commission, Abuja, DSS Director General, Police Inspector-General, Ministry of Education, University of Ibadan management among others.

Dressing journalists after protesting at the Bodija Housing Estate Mosque, Bodija, Chairman of the ISI Muslim Parents Forum, Alhaji Abdulrahaman Balogun said all parents ' efforts to settle the matter out of court had proved abortive as school management refused to shift ground but insisted on maintaining the uniform status quo.

The protesting learners who arrived after Friday Jumat Service at the mosque door said they would resist any attempt to legally, legitimately and peacefully deny their fundamental rights to their kids.

Balogun said, "The Federal Republic of Nigeria Constitution has given everybody the guarantee and any attempt to deny any of our children any of these fundamental human rights will be resisted legally, legally and peacefully.

"In the case of Lagos and Ilorin, we have two appeal judgments in support of the hijab right and we are just waiting for the supreme court's judgment on it. And we expect that a Nigerian and in a public-owned school, even if it is a privately owned school, you have to obey the constitution of the Federal Republic Nation. And this is what we are talking about.

"To do that peacefully, because the thing is now leading to a hazardous height, because when you are now attacking our children, harassing the parents, it becomes too risky, so we have requested the National Human Rights Commission, we have requested the DG DSS, we have requested the Police IG, and we have requested the Ministry of Education, including the University Authority.

"It is my joy and honor to announce that we have reinstated our case against Ibadan University, reinstated our case against ISI leadership, We have reinstated our case against Mrs Phebean Olowe, and we have reinstated our case against the DVC (Academic), Professor E.B. Ekanola, and they would have been brought to trial.  We filled out 11 distinct instances in accordance with court information.

"We had three meetings to settle out of court, we changed ground and requested them to inform us how the college intends to dress in terms of form, fashion, color, size and others, but they say no, the status quo must be preserved.

"But ISI's school rules and regulations, there's nothing but section 7 that says students can't wear hijab. Nothing in the books prevents our daughters or anyone willing to decorate hijab, let alone the FRN's constitution. Even if something like that exists, FRN's constitution overrides any other enabling law. And if it wasn't there, why are our girls being harassed?
