Ahmadu Bello University Alumni to honour retiring Mass Comm Professor

On Saturday, July 13, 2019, old and current students from the Mass Communication Department, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, will honor their former Head of Department, Prof. Suleiman Salau, who is retiring from the institution's service.

One of the department's former pupils and lecturers, Dr. Ibrahim Jimoh, informed The Nation that a meeting was organized in honor of Prof. Salau, who is the University's first professor of mass communication.

Jimoh, who is chairman of the planning commission, said a book of reading complied with by the former pupils will be unveiled during the lunch to be attended by senior academics at the university and his former students.

Akeem Mojisola Adeyanju, Ibrahim Jimoh and Hashim Mohammad Suleiman, all former students of Prof. Salau, edit the book entitled "Mass Media in Nigeria: Research, Theories and Practice."
While Adeyanju is presently a senior research fellow at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies where he also serves as Deputy Chief Operating Officer, Communication, Dr. Ibrahim and Suleiman are both senior lecturers at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria's Mass Communication Department.

Dr. Jimoh said: "In recognition of his contribution to the Mass Communication Department, ABU, Zaria, where he taught and touched many life, Prof. Suleiman Salau's former and existing learners will have a lunch at ABU on 13 July to unveil a book published in honor of Prof. Salau.

"The book,' Mass Media in Nigeria: Research, Theories and Practice,' is 733 pages of double peer reviewed with about 35 sections of contributors covering all elements of Nigeria's mass communication. Professors and academics from every region of the nation are among the contributors.

"Indeed, very few are like Prof Salau who has touched so many lives and this has given him a father's place in many people's life, so honoring a book is the least we can do to demonstrate him gratitude.

"It is worth celebrating a guy who has spent his whole life since joining ABU in the 1970s nurturing men and females and supervising a department to what it is today."

Prof. Salau midwified the department's establishment in the mid-1990s and graduated several learners.
