Adeleke University allegedly forcing Muslims to attend church

The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) accused the institution of persecuting Muslim learners at Adeleke University, Ede, Osun State.

This was included in a declaration by MURIC Director Professor Ishaq Akintola on Tuesday.

"Adeleke University is a serial violator of the basic freedoms of Muslim learners given by Allah. This institution is forcing Muslim learners on Sundays to attend church. It makes it compulsory to attend church every Wednesday and Saturday for learners residing in the hostel, "it read.
"On campus, except Christianity, the practice of any other faith is prohibited. Muslim students are not allowed to observe Salat. Hijab is a tabu at the University of Adeleke. Yet all these Islamophobic practices are smartly concealed from the institution's potential learners until they have paid the exorbitant college charges and are no longer able to withdraw. "MURIC called on the National Universities Commission (NUC) to come to Adeleke University to rescue Muslim learners.

"We invite NUC in specific to look at this institution's manual for learners, particularly pages 7, 49, 50, 56 and 60. In our view, these websites contain laws that infringe Muslim students ' religious liberty. As a regulatory body, NUC has a obligation to intervene as part of its supervisory function on the universities of Nigeria in this matter.

"At this juncture, such intervention is essential to improve quality control. We remember that human beings are body, soul and spirit. These three organs must work to maximize performance without hindrance for learners. As things stand today, Adeleke University's Muslim students were deprived of their humanity's spiritual element. We are therefore urgently calling on NUC to explore this problem. Religious repression represents a potential threat to peace, law and order.
"MURIC is consciousthat in a few other private universities such methods of religious intolerance exist. We therefore recommend taking the required precaution to Muslim parents and Muslim students. Before picking up interesting colleges, they should explore very well.

"Many private schools do not bear the names of Christians but pursue evangelical Christian objectives. Worse yet, they lack the tolerance spirit. Therefore, Muslim applicants who have already selected private universities where they are probable to be victims of Islamophobia are recommended to apply for a university change before it is too late.
