British Council, Cambridge remuneration Nigerian highflyers
It was a day of joy for 91 pupils, their schools and parents as they were honored at last Friday's Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards at the Civic Centre, Victoria Island Lagos by the British Council and Cambridge Assessment International Education.
In four global exams–Cambridge IGCSE; Cambridge International AS Level; Cambridge O Level and Cambridge A Level–students from 46 colleges received 125 prizes for excellence in 2017 and 2018, conducted by Cambridge Assessment International Education.
The award categories were: Cambridge IGCSE and Cambridge International AS Level Top in the World; Cambridge IGCSE / Cambridge International AS Level Top in Nigeria; Cambridge IGCSE / Cambridge International AS Level, Cambridge O Level and Cambridge A Level; Best Across Awards in the multiple examination categories; and High Achievement in the Cambridge IGCSE / Cambridge International AS Level;
Lifeforte International High School students, Ibadan, clinched 36 of the prizes, including four of the five Best Across awards, and one of the top three in the World Award.
The school principal, Mrs. Grace Aina, said in an interview that the students were subjected to quality tuition and said that they could do everything with God as their enabler.
"I'm thankful to God. We are a Christian school and we are teaching excellence in personality. God is a good God. We think in the inclusion of the spirit of excellence in our learners. We're always telling them to target 90-100%. We're telling them that from the junior schools. The school of our kids in Nigeria as well as overseas. Wherever they go, they excel, "she said.
In his lecture, Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Director, Cambridge Assessment, Juan Visser, said the Cambridge programs were strict and intended to prepare learners for more than anticipated achievement.
"We are proud to work on preparing learners with the expertise and abilities they need to do well in the future with over 10,000 colleges around the globe. This is why we ensure that our programs and skills are strict, up-to-date, continuously enhanced, and that learners are well prepared for their next level of education. And you can always be sure that the grades attained by students here in[ Nigeria] in Cambridge are the same standard as those achieved by Cambridge students in any other country in the world. A grade A* in the United States or the United Kingdom is the same as an A* in Nigeria. Every year,Thousands of learners use our skills to join universities around the globe, including top universities such as Harvard, Yale, Oxford and, of course, Cambridge, "said Visser, represented by Kanto Adesina, Cambridge Assessment International Education's Territory Manager.
Also talking, British Council Nigeria's Country Director, Lucy Pearson, said it was essential to prepare learners with abilities to survive the future world of technology-driven job.
Peter Thomas, Mission Deputy Head, British Deputy High Commission, Lagos, said the British government was working with Nigeria to improve the education industry.
"We know the importance of excellent education and are presently working with the Nigerian education sector's main stakeholders to develop the industry and enhance access to quality education," he said.
