Unijos students urged to develop stress free mechanisms

Unijos students urged to develop stress free mechanisms

Following increasing stress and depression among youth across the nation resulting in widespread suicide instances, Jos University students were advised to create stress-resistant systems to address life problems.

Students were also told not to allow anything to distract their focus on their academic career The admonition is contained in a distinguished alumni lecture arranged by the Directorate of Alumni Relations at the University of Jos when they hosted one of Chevron Nigeria Limited's alumni Mrs. Joy Chinoyerem Emeghara.

Mrs Emeghara, who spoke on "Building Resilience" as the guest professor, pointed out that, "There are so many variables available in universities and society to distract learners from concentration on academic job, such as culture, social media, bad teaching climate, peer group, etc.

"Take the university as a platform to develop yourself and understand your potential, as well as consider the reality that your life is for you to handle and handle efficiently by resisting friendships or colleagues that do not contribute value to your academic growth.

"Be confident and be strong in saying no to material stuff, say no to culture.

"Just create the powerful spirit to advance against all odds once you're in college as an undergraduate. I am a living instance, I have confronted a number of private difficulties, but I have told myself that I have to gain a nice degree from college and that I have succeeded. You can also succeed, just make up your mind to be successful.

University Vice Chancellor Professor Sabastine Maimako, who was represented by the Dean Faculty of Natural Sciences Professor Georgina Mwansat, said it was essential for the university to hold periodic discussions with learners on stress management and life coping systems based on latest youth-related depression incidents.

Prof. Maimako said, "Our current and former learners are the institution's main assets, and we're not going to be pleased to lose any of them. We are therefore keen in their future and we will do our utmost to make them outstanding in college and after-school life.
The guest lecturer is a fine illustration of what we want our former learners to be and we promote current learners not to allow anything around them to distract you from facing your books and graduating in flying colors.

The VC observed that over the past two years, college leadership has sought to create the classroom atmosphere so conducive to our learners by embarking on huge social infrastructure building.
In his comments, Advancement office director Samuel Muansat commends the guest lecturer for being the institution's excellent product, stating the university has made a tradition of keeping track of their former learners and considering them to be the school's critical stakeholders.

He urged the learners to emulate Mrs. Emeghara's resilience in order to become a role model for others.
